When drawing the trench, it is usally easier to draw the side along which im working against (IE a footpath edge) first, and then the width. Othewise i then have to rotate the object. Allow a user input by holding shift while drawing to allow users to draw the length first.

You can choose whether to draw the length or the width without holding shift >> all what you need to do is to decide which side of the trench you want to digitise and then draw the other side. Please try it and let us know how you get on.
